In todayβs issue, we talk about Nimesh Kampani. That doesn't ring a bell? Well, for most of us, it will not. But the truth is, Nimesh Kampani is the confidant of some of the richest Indians.

Nimesh Kampani is a chartered accountant turned merchant and investment banker by profession. Known as Nimeshbhai in the Mumbai big money circles, this merchant banker serves some of the tallest names in India. The story of this mega deal maker goes back t 1973.
The Begining:
January 01, 1973, rather than celebrating the new year in his home, Nimesh Kampani went to his new office. He along with his cousin. The company was known as JM Financials. Nimesh Kampani and his cousin invested 5,000 rupees each in the company. That was the first and last investment, Nimesh Kampani made in the company.
JM Financials was profitable from day 1. The company initially did portfolio management and stockbroking. After a few initial years, JM Financials ventured IPOs.
The IPOs:
JM Financial does booking making and underwriting of IPOs in Indian markets for Indian companies.
Nimesh Kampani and JM Financial oversaw two of the biggest and most successful IPOs of India: TCS and Bharti Airtel. Nimesh Kampani also advised the Indian Government on the stake sale process of ONGC.
The M&A Expert:
The real expertise of Nimesh Kampani lies in the domain of Mergers and Acquisitions. JM Financials advised some of the biggest mergers and acquisitions.
He is the man who got Kumar Mangalam Birla, Ratan Tata and AT&T of USA into a room and brokered a deal. Tata, Birla and AT&T came together to launch a telecom company.
The Confidant:
Nimesh Kampani is among the most trusted executives of Indiaβs top business houses.
When the Ambani brothers were fighting for the control of the Reliance empire. Nimesh Kampani was among the very first people Kokilaben dialled. The task Kokilaben gave Nimesh Kampani was a massive one.
he along with K V Kamath, the former CEO of ICICI Bank and Dhirubhaiβs personal banker was tasked with diving into the biggest corporate empire of India.
He was also the sole advisor to the demerger of Bajaj Auto to form Bajaj Finserv, one of the biggest demergers in India.
Nimesh Kampani, along with Hemendra Kothari and Uday Kotak together was known as the βThree Ksβ of Indian investment banking. We will explore the story of the other two βKβs in a later issue.
In October 2019 Nimesh Kampani decided to stop being the rainmaker and retired from J M Financials. He handed over the reins of the company to his son Vishal Kampani.
